| Introduction |

The original group forming the Lord's
church in Memphis first met in homes, but, according to an article in
The Christian Chronicle, by Ealon V. Wilson, the small congregation
moved to more adequate facilities in The Woman's Building in the late
1890's. Comparatively soon thereafter, it moved into its own building on
Gaylord Avenue. The name of the street was later changed to Harbert
Avenue. In 1905, the group moved to its present location, 1930 Union
Avenue (from which Coleman Avenue originated in 1911). The second
congregation in the city began in 1908 at the intersection of McKellar and
Shelby Street. |

According to The Directory of Churches,
Missions and Religious Institutions, No. 79, prepared by The Tennessee
Historical Survey, and sponsored by The Tennessee State Planning
Commission, the Shelby County Board of Commissioners, and Memphis City
Commission, p.vi., this congregation was formed by a group living in the
Highland Heights area. It conducted its initial services in The Odd Fellow
Hall in The Woman's Building on North Court Avenue, and after a period,
moved to a room in an old hotel near the intersection of National Street
and Simmer Avenue. |
